Once a week, we shorten our schedule to create another time slot. During this "extra time," we hold what we call Advisory. We assign each teacher a group of kids to work with in areas other than academics. In Adivsory we prepare our folders for Student Lead Conferences, as well as lead the kids in a community service project or event.
TMS students are doing great things in our community. We assign every student at Tenino Middle School to an Advisory class where students are working to grow, individually, as learners, workers, and citizens. As part of the citizen portion of Advisory, each class has taken on a community service project. Some of our past highlights include:
- Mr. Wells’ Advisory of seventeen 8th grade students, sponsored a drive to collect blankets for the homeless. In the final week of the drive they collected over 20 blankets for the Olympia Salvation Army.
- Ms. Van Horn's class collected items for the Mary Bridge Children's Hospital Giving Tree.
- Ms. Bower's class had a Hat Day. Students wanting to wear hats paid $1 to wear a hat that day. They donated all of the funds to victims of the recent flooding in Lewis and Thurston Counties.
- Mr. O'Connor's class sold holiday grams. Students filled out a holiday card and sent it to their friends.
- Mr. Ellis' Advisory visited the Riverside Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Centralia shortly after a flood.
- Mr. Cutler's class adopted a class at the elementary school, and worked with them on reading and math.
- Mrs. Evan's 8th grade group volunteered at the local animal shelters.
- Miss Kitterman's Advisory group collected used eye glasses to give to the Lion's Club for people who couldn’t afford to buy glasses.
- Mr. G's Advisory supported campus beautification.
We are very proud of the efforts of our past students, and look forward to the future contributions of our students.
